Dress For Success In The Work Place
You may not be the CEO, but don’t let that stop you from dressing like one. The first step to success is making sure you dress the part. Remember to dress for the job you want and not the one you have. Your appearance is everything.
Have you ever seen a woman who works in the mail room at your company dressed to the nines? Hair perfectly coiffed, immaculately dressed and you’ve watched her walk around like she owns the place? You look at her and wonder why … it’s because she has a positive attitude and aspires to move up in the company.
Many people take menial jobs as a way to get in the door. You hear stories all the time about women (and men) who answered phones, cleaned the office or filed papers before they climbed the ranks. Well, one big part of getting to the next level is to make sure you have it going on.
The JBG Staff has come up with some helpful hints for getting noticed at the job and command an unforgettable presence every time you walk into the office. These tips can help all women, regardless of your title, salary or aspirations.
1.Take Pride In Your Appearance
When you look good, you feel good and others take notice. Whether it’s the construction worker yelling out as you walk down the street or your co-worker giving you a compliment, most women are happier when they look good.
2. Make Sure Your Clothes Are Clean
Whether you have one pair of pants or one hundred, make sure your clothes are always clean. You may think nobody notices the stains on your blouse, dirt on your shoes or lint on your coat, but they do.
3. Develop Your Own Style and Dare To Be A Little Different
It’s nice to fit into the corporate world, but it’s not necessary for all women to dress alike. Spice up a black suit with a bright colored shirt, a lapel pin or a funky scarf. Develop a style that presents you as an individual and not a corporate copycat in a tradition white shirt and pearls.
4. Invest In A Designer Bag, Good Watch and Tasteful Jewelry
A designer bag, a good watch and a couple pieces of tasteful jewelry will do wonders for your image. If you can’t afford a Louie, Gucci or Prada, it’s okay. Coach, Michael Kors and Kate Spade have stylish bags that will give you the most bang for your buck. Gold & Silver, two-tone watches will give you versatility and go easy with the jewelry at work --- less is more.
5. Save Your Gold Grill (Teeth) & Hoochie-Mama Jeans For The Weekend
Dress down day doesn’t mean it’s okay to roll up in the office with your gold teeth and skin-tight, hoochie mama jeans. Save those items for the weekend, if you must. Whether you’re in the board room or the mail room, you’re being watched.
6. Change Your Hairdo From Time To Time
Take a lesson from Oprah, girlfriends. It’s okay to change your hairdo from time to time. Flip it up or flip it down, curly or straight, black, brown or blonde, it doesn’t matter. Just remember that change is good. It’s add excitement to your appearance.
7. Take It Easy With The Perfume
Just because you like Victoria Secret’s Sexy For Her or Baby Phat’s Goddess perfume doesn’t mean everyone else in your office does. Some girlfriends have a tendency to be heavy handed with their scent, but a little dab will do ya! Too much can be offensive.
8. Make Sure Your Clothes Fit
Girlfriends, if you wear big clothes it makes you look bigger. If you wear tight clothes it makes you look bigger. Stay in your lane and buy the right size clothing so your outfit will compliment your body whether you’re a size six or a sixteen. Big girls, move away from the Lycra and Spandex.
9. Mix & Match Your Apparel To Create New Outfits
When you mix and match your clothing, it adds excitement to your wardrobe. It’s okay to take the black pants from your favorite suit and wear them with your grey jacket and a pink pinstripe shirt. Go ahead and wear your suit jackets with floral skirts or even a pair of jeans every now and then. The combinations are endless.
10. If You’re Bored With Your Look, Get Help
It’s easy to fall into a fashion rut, but there’s help all around you. Pick up the most recent issue of your favorite fashion magazine, the newspaper or even surf the net for the latest fashions. Most department stores and boutiques have saleswomen who are willing to come to your rescue.
