No Fuss Holiday Decorating

Holiday decorating can be a breeze if you are willing to cut a few corners for the sake of time. JBG asked its members what tricks they’ve learned over the years when it comes to decorating their home --- inside and out.

We were pleasantly surprised to find out you don’t have to spend 101 hours getting the house ready to welcome holiday guests. Here’s our no fuss holiday decorating tips to help you get your home spruced up for Christmas in a jiffy.

Outside Your Home

  1. Buy a personalized “Happy Holidays” weather proof banner to display on your lawn.
  2. Don’t even think about stringing individual stands of lights on the shrubs and bushes outside your house; use the new net lights to impress your neighbors. It takes about three minutes per bush to arrange them.
  3. Decorate your front door with shinny wrapping paper, a wreath and green garland.
  4. If it’s not too much work, use the same garland and a large ribbon (that matches the wreath) on light poles and the mailbox.
  5. Shine color flood lights (that match your door decorations) at your house.
  6. Place a Christmas mat outside your door.
  7. Create a Christmas scene on your front with pre-lit or inflatable accessories.
  8. Fill your flower boxes with fake Poinsettias.
  9. Drape garland and bows on your fence.
  10. Hang giant Christmas baubles on trees in front of your house.

Inside Your Home

  1. Give your existing runner and area rug a break and replace them with the Christmas theme ones.
  2. Add Christmas pillows, especially red ones, to your couch and chairs.
  3. Wrap your wall pictures with Christmas paper and a big bow.
  4. Place Christmas ornaments, figurines and baskets on coffee and end tables.
  5. Showcase your family Christmas photos and frames.
  6. String Christmas lights on your front window and inside your family room and basement.
  7. Set up your Christmas tree early and get the kids their own mini trees and ornaments to decorate with personalized items. Place their trees in the family or in their bedrooms.
  8. Print out Christmas coloring pages and let the kids color. Frame their holiday masterpieces and place them around the house.
  9. Mistletoe is not the only thing to hang from the ceiling; use nylon string and hang Christmas baubles too.
  10. Skip the paint job, it’s just not worth the inconvenience when Christmas is just around the corner. Wash down the spots and use holiday decorations to camouflage.
