HOME / HEALTH AND FITNESS / Eggnog For the Holidays!
Fitness Forum: Maria Trice-Jones

1. I love eggnog! From the beginning of December to the New Year, I usually drink a good four gallons of eggnog. My husband and I buy it from the grocery store and mix it with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and rum. Is our eggnog recipe really fattening?

It is so fattening you may as well buy new clothes for the New Year, especially if you are not working out during this month of creamy decadence. You really don't want know how many calories you are drinking. The sugar and fat is going straight to your waist and hips. I can only recommend a modified approach, reduce your eggnog consumption this holiday season.

2. From January to November I am in the gym three times a week, but this year, I've given myself permission to slack off and get there when I get there. Will it be hard for me to get on track when I go back in January?

Not at all! It sounds like you are a disciplined person committed to your fitness. Most importantly it's good to schedule controlled breaks from the gym. It gives your body a well deserved rest. However, when you get back to your regular routine your muscles will remind you that you took a break. You may experience muscle soreness. Enjoy your break girlfriend, it’s a good thing.

3. According to the height and weight scale, my doctor advised me to lose 60 pounds. I'm 5' 6, 212 pounds and wear a size 18. I think I would look like a crackhead if I lost that much weight. Are those charts realistic for black women?

We may like to have a little extra junk in our trunk, but the reality is that it causes a lot of serious problems particularly if you maintain 20 to 30 pounds over your goal weight for a long period of time. Your doctor is absolutely right, but if set small goals for yourself. Set your first goal at losing 20 pounds. Once you’ve accomplished that goal, you’ll be motivated to lose more. Heart Disease is the second largest killer of Black women between the ages of 40 and 55 according to the New England Journal of Medicine. Obesity has been linked to serious health problems, like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and stroke. I know it sounds lean but you can do it. And by the way, you will not look like a crackhead. Good luck girlfriend and don’t give up.
